Quick notes
The first bell rings at 8:00 and class starts at 8:10. Please help your child arrive on time to school so they may be ready to go, in our classroom by 8:10. Anyone who is not in our classroom by 8:10 will be marked tardy. When all students arrive on time it allows for instruction to begin on time. Dismissal is now at 2:40. Thank you for your support.
Library checkout will be once every 6 days as we are on a 6 day rotation. Please help your child remember their library books each week. They will be allowed to have 2 or 3 books checked out at a time.

Homework-Reading
Guided Reading Books/Passages- Please set aside time each night to read these books with them. Reading every night not only helps your child become a stronger reader, but also helps to build a sturdy foundation for all other areas in school.
snack
Each day we will have snack break. Westside is following the guidelines for healthy snacks from the Cass Clay Healthy People Initiative. We will also have a fruit and/or veggie option provided Tuesday through Friday. There will be no snack provided Mondays so feel free to keep a box of snacks in their lockers or desks for those days. Please send only healthy snacks with your child every day. Let me know if you have questions about this.
Absences
Please let the office or myself know if your child is sick or going to be absent before 8:10. This will eliminate the automated phone call :)
Nurse Note:
Reminder: Please be prompt in picking up your sick or injured child from school! He/She must be picked up within 30 minutes or less of receiving a call indicating your child is sick or injured. Our goal is to provide the best care we can for your child and being home when they are sick is the best thing! Students need to remain out of school for 24 hours once a fever is less than 100 degrees without the use of medication. Also students must remain out of school for 24 hours once vomiting or diarrhea has stopped without the use of medication. Thank you for your assistance with following district policies and keeping out school healthy
Birthday celebrations
Your child will be celebrated by getting to choose an activity to do in the classroom on their birthday/or day of choice if not present on their birthday! Westside asks you save the cake, ice cream and sweets for at home and help promote healthy eating at school.
Please Note...
We have noticed in the past a number of students bringing Pokémon cards to school. To help ensure that there is not any cards lost, stolen, or other problems associated with bringing these types of cards (unfair trades, arguments that distract from the learning environment, etc.) we ask that you not allow your child to bring these to school. See the below section from the student handbook that speaks towards this item:
bus tags
At Westside our top priority is keeping students safe. Our new Bus tags system will help us keep your student/s safe. The tags need to be worn by your child for the whole school year. Please do NOT remove the tag from your child’s backpack. If your child needs a new tag, please call the office. Each child that rides the bus will have a tag attached
to their backpack that they will scan upon getting on and off the bus. This
will help us in tracking our students and keeping them safe. Please contact the office if you have any questions.

WFPS District Protocol for All K-5 Elementary Schools
Specific guidelines will be used during cold weather.
Morning Procedure: Students will be allowed to come into the building in the morning if the weather is inclement (Wind chill is -15° F). They will wait in a designated area for school to begin. We strongly urge you not to bring students to the school before the time students are allowed to enter the building.
Noon Recess: Students have been confined for 3 1/2 hours and need exercise and fresh air. The guidelines used to judge whether students will go outside during noon recess are dependent upon the temperature and wind chill (wind chill is -15° F). The supervisor on outside duty may also decide if students will come in early before the bell. This allows flexibility in allowing for the differences in physical development and the age level of students. The temperature and wind chill information used is obtained from the National Weather Service on a daily basis.

Clothing for Cold Weather: North Dakota winter weather can be very cold. Therefore, dress your children warmly during the winter months. Children must wear mittens or gloves, overshoes/boots, caps, and scarves. During winter months, snow pants and boots are required. Bare legs should be covered in the winter. Except in the case of very severe weather, students will spend up to 30 minutes outside during the noon recess. Students must be dressed warmly enough to be comfortable. Also, if your child tends to chill while sitting in school, have them wear long sleeves, sweaters/sweatshirts, or leave a sweater/sweatshirt labeled with the child's name in school for continued use. Parents, your children must wear overshoes or boots in the winter months and when it is wet and/or muddy outside. The children's feet need to remain warm and dry, and our school must remain clean. If you are unable to provide appropriate winter clothing/gear for your child please contact the school and we will do our best to help meet those needs. Apparel should be marked with the child's name so it can be identified and returned if lost.
